Make Your Home Warmer, Safer and More Comfortable with Help from Alberta’s SHARP Program
Replacing old windows and exterior doors can make a noticeable difference in the way your home feels every day. New products can reduce cold drafts, improve security, make windows and doors easier to operate, and help your home retain more heat during Alberta winters.
The upfront cost, however, can make an important renovation difficult to plan.
The Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program, commonly known as SHARP, gives eligible Alberta seniors access to a low-interest home equity loan for approved repairs, adaptations, and renovations to their primary residence. Window replacement is specifically listed by the Government of Alberta as an example of a project that may be considered under the program.
Canglow Windows & Doors can provide a free in-home consultation, recommend products suited to your home, and prepare a detailed written estimate for your SHARP application.
What Is the SHARP Program?
SHARP is a Government of Alberta program created to help eligible seniors remain safe, independent, and comfortable in their own homes.
Qualifying homeowners may apply for a low-interest home equity loan to help pay for approved home repairs, renovations, and adaptations. The program is intended to support improvements that can make a home safer, more accessible, or more energy efficient.
Examples provided by the Government of Alberta include window replacement, furnace and hot water tank upgrades, roofing, stair lifts, bathroom adaptations, and doorway modifications. A written estimate or paid receipt must be provided for the project funds being requested.
Canglow is not the administrator of SHARP and cannot approve an application. We can, however, help with the window and door portion of your project by providing clear pricing, product specifications, and the supporting estimate required for your submission.
Key SHARP Loan Details
Eligible applicants may be able to receive:
Up to $40,000
The maximum outstanding SHARP loan available for a household’s primary residence is currently $40,000, excluding interest. The minimum amount requested in an application is $500.
No Required Monthly Payments
SHARP loans do not require regular monthly repayments. Homeowners may repay the loan voluntarily at any time. Otherwise, the balance generally becomes due when the home is sold, the borrower is no longer a registered owner, or the property is no longer the borrower’s primary residence.
Low-Interest Home Equity Financing
The program uses the equity in the applicant’s primary residence to secure the loan. A caveat is registered against the property title, and simple interest is charged on the original loan amount. The interest rate is reviewed by the Government of Alberta every six months, so homeowners should confirm the current rate before applying.
Important: SHARP approval, eligible costs, available funding, and loan terms are determined exclusively by the Government of Alberta.
Who May Qualify for a SHARP Loan?
The Government of Alberta currently lists several basic eligibility requirements. Generally, an applicant must:
- Be at least 65 years old. For a couple, only one spouse or partner needs to meet the age requirement.
- Have a total annual household income of $75,000 or less.
- Be a Canadian citizen or have been lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence.
- Have lived in Alberta for at least three months.
- Be a registered owner of the residential property.
- Use the property as a primary residence.
- Maintain at least 25% equity in the home after the proposed SHARP loan is included.
- Carry home insurance at full replacement value.
Additional rules apply to property ownership, registered charges, and the calculation of available home equity. Final eligibility is decided by SHARP program staff, not by Canglow.
Can SHARP Be Used for Replacement Windows?
Window replacement is listed by the Government of Alberta as an example of a project that may qualify for a SHARP loan.
Older windows can create several problems inside the home:
- Cold drafts around the frame
- Condensation or frost during winter
- Rooms that remain colder than the rest of the house
- Windows that are difficult to open, close or lock
- Excessive exterior noise
- Rising heating costs
- Air leakage around aging frames and seals
Replacing these windows with modern, professionally installed units can improve comfort and make everyday operation easier. This is especially valuable for homeowners who plan to remain in their homes for many years.
Canglow offers a complete range of replacement windows, including casement, awning, slider, and picture windows. Each unit is custom manufactured for the existing opening and installed by an experienced crew.
Replacement Windows Designed for Alberta
Alberta windows must handle far more than ordinary seasonal weather.
They are exposed to prolonged freezing temperatures, strong winds, dry winter air, and large temperature changes. A window that performs well in a mild climate may not provide the same comfort during an Edmonton cold snap.
Canglow windows are built with features selected for Alberta and Northern Canadian conditions, including:
- Insulated multi-chamber vinyl frames
- Low-E glass coatings
- Argon-filled insulated glass units
- Warm-edge spacer systems
- Durable weather seals
- Secure, easy-to-operate hardware
- Double- and triple-pane glass options
Our windows have been installed throughout Alberta and as far north as Yellowknife, where winter temperatures can be far more severe. That practical experience helps us recommend products based on real Canadian conditions rather than a generic national specification.
Can Exterior Doors Be Included?
SHARP loans may cover approved repairs, renovations, and adaptations to a primary residence. Whether a specific entry door or patio door project qualifies will depend on the program’s review of the application and project documentation.
Replacing an aging exterior door may help address:
- Air leakage around the frame
- A door that is difficult to open or latch
- Worn weatherstripping
- Damaged or inefficient glass
- Poor security
- A heavy patio door that no longer slides properly
- An uncomfortable entrance during winter
Canglow supplies insulated fiberglass and steel entry doors, as well as energy-efficient patio door systems. Our project manager can assess the existing opening and prepare an itemized quote showing the products and installation included.

How the Process Works with Canglow
1. Schedule a Free In-Home Estimate
A Canglow project manager will visit your property, inspect the existing windows or doors, and discuss the improvements you are considering.
2. Review Your Product Options
We will explain suitable window styles, glass packages, door materials, operating features, and available upgrades. Recommendations will be based on the home, your priorities, and your budget.
3. Receive a Detailed Written Quote
You will receive a clear estimate showing the proposed products, installation, and project cost. SHARP requires a written cost estimate or receipts for the project funds being requested.
4. Submit Your SHARP Application
You apply directly to the Government of Alberta. SHARP staff review the application and may contact you or the contractor if additional information is required. Approval must be received from the program.
5. Confirm the Project
Once financing and project details are finalized, Canglow will confirm your order and arrange production.
6. Professional Installation
Your windows or doors will be installed by an experienced Canglow crew. We protect the work area, remove the old products, and check every new unit for proper fit and operation.
Important Information Before Starting Work
Applicants should carefully review the SHARP rules before accepting project materials or beginning installation.
The program provides specific consumer cancellation rights in certain situations when an applicant signs a renovation contract but is later found ineligible for a SHARP loan. Those protections may be lost if the homeowner accepts the agreed goods or services before receiving the program’s decision.
For that reason, do not assume your application has been approved until you have received confirmation directly from SHARP.
What If You Do Not Qualify for a SHARP Loan?
Some lower-income senior homeowners who do not qualify for a SHARP loan may be considered for a SHARP grant covering certain basic and essential repairs.
The grant is separate from the loan program and has lower income thresholds, different property requirements, and specific limits for eligible repairs. It is not a general renovation grant. The official grant list currently includes limited assistance for exterior doors, but it does not list full window replacement as an eligible grant category.
Applicants must submit a completed SHARP application to be considered. The Government of Alberta determines whether an applicant qualifies for a loan, a grant, or neither.
Canglow also offers additional payment options for homeowners who do not use SHARP.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much can I borrow through SHARP?
The current maximum outstanding SHARP loan is up to $40,000 per household for the primary residence, excluding interest. The amount approved depends on eligibility, available equity, and the program’s review.
Do I need to make monthly payments?
SHARP does not require monthly repayments. You may repay voluntarily, but the loan generally becomes due when the home is sold, the borrower is no longer a registered owner, or the home stops being the borrower’s primary residence.
Does Canglow approve SHARP financing?
No. SHARP is administered by the Government of Alberta. Canglow provides window and door consultations, product recommendations, estimates, and supporting project information.
Can I apply after completing the work?
SHARP may consider retroactive funding for eligible work completed and paid for within the 12 months before the program receives the application. Receipts are required. Approval is not guaranteed.
Do I have to replace every window?
No. Canglow can quote a complete-home replacement or a smaller project focusing on the windows and doors causing the greatest problems.
Can windows be installed during winter?
Yes. Canglow completes window installations throughout the year. The crew works on one opening at a time to limit exposure while completing the replacement correctly.
Are triple-pane windows required?
Not in every case. Your project manager will compare double- and triple-pane options based on the home, window size, exposure, and comfort goals.
